iOS9 Update

Earlier on during the year Apple announced its next operating system update for all of their iOS devices. This week they released the update to all its devices and I was excited to see what new features would help me to use the devices more effientely. As a iPhone and iPad user I was very excited to see what iOS 9 had to offer.

I first installed iOS 9 onto my iPhone 6. The first thing I noticed was how much storage it took to install. According to Apple, iOS 9 needed far less space to install after its disaster last year with iOS 8. It certainly showed with iOS 9 installing very easily with not any applications or media needing to be deleted to accommodate the operating system. I then decided to install it on my iPad 2 (discontinued). It was just as easy, with the fact that I needed to charge it, therefore I left it to install overnight.

After a few days being able to use iOS 9 as apart of my normal day I am generally happy with it.

Some of the initially change which I found using iOS 9 are;

Multitasking
  • Multitasking: A popular feature on all iOS devices has had an update. Now when you double click the home button all of applications that you have open appear from right to left. As before you had all of your applications appear from left to right. Your contacts also don't appear any more. You are still able to close each application by fixing it up.

  • Wallet: Not that I use it at all, but I did notice that Apple has replaced Passbook. Wallet holds your boarding passes, tickets and coupons. This application is something which I would like to use more, but don't travel or use coupons enough to use it to its full capacity.

Siri: Siri knows more than ever. When I drive home to and from work Siri notifies me to let me know how long it takes me to get to work and back to home. Siri will begin to learn more about you the longer you use it. When you swipe left from the home pages, a list of suggestions from Siri appears. Suggestions include contacts and applications which may have been contacted or used recently. Recent news stories headlines also appear that you may be interested in reading.

  • Battery: With iOS 9 your device will be able to last longer with its new Low Power Mode. Under the battery settings you are also able to analyse your battery usage and see what apps are using more battery than others. I have found that turning Low Power Mode on gives me an additional hour or more using my iPhone during the day.

  • Text: Even though it's only an update, you would think that it was a new iPhone with the new text displaying throughout all applications and interface.

  • Keyboard: It doesn't sound like a huge change, but the keyboard has changed slightly. As well as accommodating the new text, the keyboard now shows upper and lower case as you would actually write it. This makes it easier to know now what case you are writing in, that of course if you were constantly tapping the arrow to change between lower case and upper case, like myself.

Things which I have not yet discovered within iOS 9;

  • Notes: There have been some changes to the Notes application. According to Apple we are able to add lists and draw anything that we like. I am yet to do this. I am not sure if I am blind or it is not yet available to me yet. These new features of the Notes application I would consider using.

  • News App: All of the demonstrations and publicity of iOS 9 show a new application for News. When I installed iOS 9 it not appears on my home screen. Therefore, I would imagine that this app is only available in America and surrounding country’s and that it would be available in Australia in the not too distant future.

  • iPad Multitasking: As my iPad is not compatible with the new multitasking gestures which are apart of iOS 9 I have been able to experience them. Including Slide Over, Split View and Picture in Picture these new features will hopefully help later iPad users to be more productive.

I hope you have enjoyed reading. I hope this is the first post of many. Feel free to contact me with suggestions of blog topics or any feedback.
